I’m preaching this coming Sunday at the Collins Street Baptist Church (10.30 am) for the Sunday before Lent: the Lectionary Gospel is Mark 9. 2 – 9, the story commonly called the Transfiguration of Jesus, and the Epistle, from 2 Corinthians 4 on a ‘veiled’ vision and the light offered to us.
It’s interesting how much of the Mark story is focussed on the three disciples, which gives me the key themes: seeing, hearing, and following.
There are also three potential ‘hero’ figures, each with a mountain story: Moses, Elijah, Jesus.
As we go into Lenten reflection, we are as it were invited to choose our own hero: as in the Gospels, there is a perpetual challenge to understand the relationship and significance for us of ‘the Law and the Prophets’. That gives us plenty to think on in this Lenten season!
