Brief encounter of the thankful kind

9 Nov

Visiting St Stephen’s Cathedral in Brisbane today, I emerged to stand on the steps where a woman of around my own age observed that the police had just entered. She sounded worried but I said to her: Perhaps they just need to pray too. She said, ‘Yes we all need God’s help’, and proceeded to tell me that it was just over a year since her husband had died, and in that year another member of her family also. I expressed my sympathy, but she said that things were now starting to look up. Though she has epilepsy, she’s getting her life back together. Her psychiatrist had recently remarked: ‘I’ve never seen you smile so much. You’re coming home to yourself.’

What a delightful concept: coming home to oneself. In this brief encounter, we both affirmed how good it is to trust in God for support. We both shared the raw reality of human life, with its struggles and grief. And we both sensed how good it is to continue to grow and learn, the sense of coming home to oneself.

A brief encounter, of the thankful kind.

  1. Delightful report Frank. There are the moments that God gives to us – when we are in the right place at the right time – and pause to smell the roses

  2. What a beautifully simple reflection – we often miss the ‘mundaneness’ and beauty in everyday life – thank you for sharing and the reminder to share with others wherever our paths cross. Thank you Frank – Dorothy
